Butt-Drop Boogie

(This is a guest post from Brigham.) The truth is that the biggest fan of this blog is, none other than, the star of the blog herself, Miss Olivia. It's all about the pictures. She can be just about anywhere in the room when she catches sight of a picture of a cute little girl on the computer screen. She comes running over, finger pointing, begging to crawl into your lap so that she can be closer to, well, a picture of herself. That's not to say she doesn't like seeing pictures of other adorable creatures, such as Maxine and various cousins. But the closeups of Olivia are her clear favorites. Given how cute and photogenic Olivia is (blogs are for bragging, right?), we are hopeful that her obsession with cute baby pictures is not narcissism but simply good taste.

The other way to get Olivia's attention is to play music. Almost anything will do, even hymns, but the real show starts when you choose something with a funky beat. Something starts down in her left leg and slowly works up into her hips before she is even fully aware of it. We call it the "butt-drop boogie." Pretty soon she is gleefully turning in circles and clapping her hands with all the force (if not the grace) of an Olympic ice-skater. The other night she was dancing so zealously, she lost her balance (not so rare) and bumped into the wall. She cried for about half a second before her butt started bobbing up and down and she suddenly forgot the injury. The show must go on.

This is where we get to the bad news: Michael Jackson. I know, I should have never played it. At the moment, that is the music that really gets her boogie going. It's not so bad. He may be dated and a little creepy, but at least his music has a good beat. And the lyrics actually speak to one key feature of her current dance style: "You knock me off my feet ... "

How fun was that video? I do have to say, though, she dances like some sorority girls I knew in college!

Olivia can definitely dance. Now we just need to work on the balance thing a little more. That video was so much fun to watch!

If I spun around that many times, I'd be falling on the floor too. I loved how appropriate the lyrics were. She's a cutie!

I love that no matter how many times she falls down, she never loses her enthusiasm for the dance. She may grow up to be a ballerina like her mother.
