So I've realized that Olivia is beginning to outgrow something I've been meaning to post about for a couple months. As her speech-language pathologist mother, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention some quirky articulation. The SLP in me is fascinated by it; the mother in me thinks it's cute. I admit to being kind of sad she's outgrowing it. So here's her funky speech thing. She cannot (until just this week) make the /sp/ blend. She can produce all the other /s/-blends, but that /sp/ is tough for her. The /sp/ always goes to /f/ (again, until this week). Following are some of my favorite mispronunciations.
- outer face
- fot
- fell
- filled
- finosaurus
- foon
- fanish
- fecial
- foovie
- fankings
- ficy
And my favorite:
- fooky
Here are a few random mispronunciations:
- dery
- bepuzz, or just puzz
- skeletope
Ten (virtual) gold stars to the first person to leave a comment with the correct translations!
And now for some funny things she has said or says on a regular basis.
- "Waiting hurts my feelings." Amen!
- "No, but thank you for asking." This, in response to something like, "Would you please finish your dinner?"
- "Yes, dearie." How old am I? How old is she? 80?
- "Just call me if you need anything." Or "If you need anything, just call me." Our perfect little hostess.
- "This is deeeeyummy." This means something is particularly delicious, not unyummy.
- "Church takes sometimes too long." Who am I to argue with the truth?
- "Mom, I have a way with animals." I don't know where this comes from.
- "If you don't hurry some…"
- "You said it, Sister!"
- "It's clever to have help."
- "I'm too cool for you." It's already started!
- "Look, Mom! I'm jungling!" That would be juggling (and she wasn't).
- "Oh, brudder!"
- "No way, dude!"
- "Might could/might can"
- "I have a hair dog in my mouth." That's a dog hair. Better than an hairy dog.
We've been having "I love you" competitions, trying to see who can come up with a description that demonstrates the most love. We've included "all the way around the world and back," "to the moon and back," "all the way through the galaxy and back." Olivia's newest is: "I love you all the way around the world and up to Jesus Christ…and back." Do you think I can top that?
And to finish this post off, "Mom, trust me." She says this to me, usually, when she's trying to convince me to let her do or have something I've already said, "No" to. It's not just the words that crack me up. She says it in a soothing tone, while stroking my arm.

"You said it, sister"
Ha! That's great.
Ha ha ha! I love it! I really love when my little kids mispronounce words. I ask Aaron not to correct them, because I know they'll correct themselves soon enough.
The other day I overheard Aaron and Carter talking about how he's figured out how to say "exhaust pipe" instead of "yaust pipe." Aaron was explaining to Carter that I'd be sad he learned how to say it right. Well, he was right. :) Really, I'm glad he does figure these things out. It's just so darn cute when he used to say them in "little language." :)
