Finding Joy in the Little Moments

If you were to ask Olivia, she would tell you that this is "the best week ever."  On Monday we went to see her friend Katherine's brand-new baby sister.  On Tuesday she had a play date with her friend Reese at our house.  Reese was immediately drawn to Olivia's super cool kitchen.  They proceeded to play "family."  Reese was the mom and Olivia was the sister.  After a few minutes, I looked over and my heart melted at the look on Olivia's face.  It was pure joy.  She was playing with her friend, they were playing the same "game" with the same ideas, with no arguing about anything.  She couldn't have been any happier at that precise moment.

Later that same day, when I went to pick her up from preschool, I took our dog, Maxine, along for the ride.  Olivia thought it was fun to be surprised by Max in the car.  Since it was such a lovely 75 degree day, we drove home with the windows down.  Max strained to reach a window.  (She's only allowed to ride in the cargo area.) I glanced back to see a similar look on her face that I had seen on Olivia's earlier in the day.  Pure joy.  The dog version, anyway.  Nose quivering, mouth open, and ears streaming in the wind.  Olivia giggled when she saw Max's ears flapping.

Two moments of perfect contentment in one day.  Perhaps there are more than that everyday, but I noticed those two specifically.  And gratefully.

Yesterday Olivia had a play date with her friend Finley while I was at an appointment.  She had such a wonderful time that she didn't want to leave when I came to pick her up.  That always happens at Finley's house!

Today we went to play with Olivia's friend Aliyah, which was also a lot of fun.  Fun for me, too, since I got to visit with my friend.  Things got a little sketchy at the end when the girls decided it would be fun to draw a hopscotch game on the patio--with markers.  Sorry, Aftin!

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful friends.  And I am lucky to observe and participate in moments of joy.  I'll be on the look-out for more.
